Greetings - I appreciate the ability to leave a comment on your website. I like discovering good quality content related to Internet marketing, Search engine optimization, and related ideas because there is too much inadequate information being circulated lately. I honestly think that these sort of areas like mobile, offline/local business, and social networking are tremendously increasing segments and to ignore them is to assure that a business (both the client's and our own) will fall behind their competitors within the next year. When was the last time anyone opened a telephone book to look for a product or service? It's all on the net now, and especially with the younger 19-34 market you can see this on a substantial growth curve. Again, many thanks and keep up the great work on your site.
It is very important to learn all you can about Search engine optimization and Internet Marketing techniques - don't ever stop the quest for knowledge and build upon your expertise in this industry!

I agree partially. If your engagement is limited to one region, one language, it is most probably true. Beeing most interested in using social media in the tourism industry, I tend to say: Maybe it makes sense!

Take TripAdvisor. Guest are posting in their mother tongue. As a middle sized hotel, how do you want to monitor and manage all these languages?

Let’s talk about culture. Ever heard of “loosing someone’s face”? The way you’re talking with Asians is very different, I’m not sure a hotel owner (again, medium sized) has the knowledge of the do’s and dont’s when talking to other cultures.

Take the countries wherre Facebook is not #1, where you need other channels. Kaixin001 in China, only one exmaple of many. To reach Chinese, you need to follow them to their channels. I doubt we have that many hotel owners who speak and read/write Chinese.

To summarize: I agree that a full outsourcing does not make sense but there are examples where the service of an external agency can make sense.

Juerg

[...] Content Curation: If you have a friend that’s particularly good at finding adorable puppy videos and insists on sending every one of them to everyone in their email address book, you’re already familiar with the concept behind content curation. Which is to say, it’s nothing more than sharing. For business, that means sharing good, relevant content with your fans and followers. When you come across something that would be informative or interesting to your customer base, post a link with an explanatory note. Make it your goal to become a trusted source of quality content.
Suchitra,
You've helped illustrate my point here - that many companies are still broadcasting their marketing messages Through Twitter and Facebook rather than to converse and build relationships. Thanks for your comment-you have a new follower!

Hello Sue,

Interesting application of the Pareto Principle - 2 tweets out of 10 should be about you. Very few companies actually do this - I have observed businesses use Twitter more for broadcasting than for conversation. I guess because people are still confusing social media as a 100% marketing channel.

I wrote about the Pareto Principle last week on my blog : http://blogbysuchitra.wordpress.com/2011/11/28/five-ways-to-use-the-pareto-principle-in-work-life/
You can apply the 80/20 principle almost anywhere to find the best way to direct your energies and time.

Thanks for sharing a new perspective.

Andy,
Good point. Although my title is official Social Media Analyst, I'm really more of a community manager and strategist rather than a data analyst. I do agree that there is a need for that type of data analysis, although relying on Twitter's API to develop tools still produces flawed data, which is a challenge for all programmers. Thanks for your comments! Sue
